About Our Ground Penetrating Radar Surveys

Eco Surveys now offer Ground Penetrating Radar Surveys to carry out subsurface investigations that can accurately pinpoint and map the exact locations of buried ordinance and services such as Water Mains, Gas Mains, Electrical Cables, and Pipelines.

Often abbreviated to GPR, this type of test is a geophysical method that uses radar pulses to build up a picture of the subsurface. This Non Destructive Testing (NDT) method uses electromagnetic signals which are reflected from subsurface objects, to locate items of interest and map changes in ground conditions.

GPR can be used on a variety of materials, including rock, soil, ice, fresh water, pavements and structures. It can detect objects below the surface of the test site including ferrous and non-ferrous targets, changes in material, Rebar, voids, conduits and cracks.

The test works by using high-frequency (usually polarized) radio waves which are transmitted into the ground. When the wave hits a buried object the receiving antenna records the variations in the reflected signal and this is used to build up a “picture” of what lies beneath the surface of the tested material.

The depth of a target object, such as a pipe or utility, can also be determined by processing and analysing the data received from the reflected radar pulses.

GPR can be used on almost all materials and soil types to give clear and precise information without the need for digging or destructive investigations.
